Summer is here in Nashville, no doubt about it. I walked outside today and almost immediately sought refuge back in the house. Today is the kind of day where we should all be thankful for air conditioning! Here are some tips to keep your A/C running efficiently through the summer heat.
1. Change or clean your air filter - According to Energy Star, dirt and neglect are the top causes for cooling system failure or inefficiency. Consult your owners manual or a professional for advice on how often to change your filter. Most recommend to change it quarterly (or even monthly depending on the type of system).
2. Adjust your thermostat- Set your thermostat back a few degrees when you are not home during the day or while on vacation. Think about a programmable thermostat. Using the right settings to adjust the temperature when you are not home can save you nearly $200/yr in energy costs.
3. Have your A/C unit serviced regularly- Have a certified A/C specialist inspect the condenser, compressor, fan, and coils at least once a year. Most people say spring makes sense, when it's warm enough to use but not peak summer temps yet. Make sure you have your A/C pro clean the outside coils and top off the refrigerant so you don't run out mid-summer (yes, that has happened to me).
If you are in the market for a new furnace, heat pump, or a/c unit, the State of Tennessee is offering rebates on Energy Star appliances currently. More info can be found at:
